PHOTOGRAPH OF THE WEEK - 31 March 2007

Bob Bingham

'Here is a picture of the Kerikeri river in full flow at the Stone Store bridge. Rainfall reports vary considerably around the area but one on a business site recorded over 460 mm in 24 hours. The container overflowed overnight so it recorded less than actually fell' wrote Bob.

Richard Wells

'I am a keen outdoors and hunting type and find your website the best predictor of wx I can find. The long range is especially useful. Recently I had the pleasure to do a trip to Preservation Inlet and the photo above shows a double rainbow on the highway near Wanaka' wrote Richard

Jason Tippet

'I was recently on holiday in Havelock and was fishing off a mussel farm in the Kenepouri Sound in the early evening when the sun set through the ranges. I grabbed my camera while the opportunity lasted and managed to snap up this shot. It was taken with a Cannon EOS digital with a zoom lens of 75-300mm on the 15 February 2007' wrote Jason.

Wynston Cooper

Wynston wrote 'thought you may like to see the attached photo which was taken from the top of the Crown Range Road overlooking the Gibbston Valley on 20 February 2007 - midway through a continuous spell of fine weather that I experienced for twelve consecutive days as I travelled around South Island. The mist cleared rapidly after the photo was taken.

Micky Waby

'I took this on 20 October 2006 from my living room window as my view is opposite to the sunset angle I usually only get colour if there is a good after glow, but is lovely to have this open aspect in one direction and be able to take them without even going outside!!!! just have to lean out an upstairs window. This one was at 19:29 Nikon D70 18-70 Nikon lens set at 18mm F9 with exposure at 1/25sec.

I really enjoy your site and pop in most days for a browse.' wrote Micky

Keith Thomas

'Hi James First time visit to your great site. Here are two pics taken last Thursday 8 March 2007 during a trip to Mt Cook then back past Lake Pukaki. Bog standard camera (Sony DSCP071) and dummy operator (me). Aorangi Mt Cook on way to Hooker Glacier Lake above and Mt Cook from head of Pukaki below' wrote Keith.

These photos look pretty good to us Keith.

Lee Paterson

Saw these in the sky over the Maniototo on the weekend of the Motatapu Icebreaker mountain bike ride. Sorry about the quality of the picture (through the windscreen) but cool cloud formation' wrote Lee.

Jason Malham

'Hi James, please find attached weather pic. Admittedly its not in NZ... not even the Pacific. It was taken from Mauritius where I work for 9 months of the year (I am a kiwi though!!). Anyway as its currently cyclone season, lately there have been a number of tropical cyclones in our neck of the woods. 'Cyclone skies' are one of the nicer things about cyclones and when there is one in the area we usually get to see some amazing sunsets - as all the outflow cloud at high altitude is lit up well after the sun has left the horizon.

So this photo was taken at sunset on the 11 March 2007, about the time that Cyclone Indlala became a named storm. At the time of the photo it was about 600-700km north of Mauritius. Fortunately for Mauritius it tracked to the west and became a Cat 4 cyclone before hammering the NE coast of Madagascar. Its fizzling out over land there now.

Details - taken from the high ground above the west coast, looking west. Sony Cybershot digital.

I love the web site and browse it often even while here in the Indian Ocean, its always nice to see what the weather is up to at home!' wrote John.

Many thanks John, perhaps we should also add Indian Ocean weather forecasts to the MetVUW site.

Ren Terpstra

Ren wrote 'this photo was taken on the 4 March 2007, on my first night back in the South Island after living in the North Island for 12 years. I'd forgotten how spectacular the sunsets can be down here. This intensity of colour only lasted about 5 minutes. The photo was taken from an apartment in Latimer Square, looking west over the cathedral, its tip is just visible. The camera is an Olympus E500, aperture 4.4, shutter speed 1/40.

Thanks for a great web site. As a location manager working on feature films and commercials, it's invaluable for planning filming schedules.'
